The UN food agency says it has been able to negotiate access with the Taliban to distribute aid in one provincial capital in Afghanistan but hasn’t been able to resume food deliveries to three other provincial capitals it supplies.

Taliban co-founder Baradar in Kabul for talks to set up government

Taliban co-founder Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar arrived in Kabul for talks on establishing a new “inclusive” government in Afghanistan, a senior official said.

Other senior Taliban leaders seen in the capital in recent days include Khalil Haqqani — one of America’s most wanted terrorists with a $5 million bounty on his head.

Pro-Taliban social media feeds showed Haqqani meeting Gulbuddin Hekmatyar — a former bitter rival during the brutal civil war of the early 1990s, but still influential in Afghan politics.

A senior Taliban official told AFP that Baradar would meet “jihadi leaders and politicians for an inclusive government set-up”. — AFP

India evacuates around 80 people from Kabul

Around 80 Indian nationals were evacuated on Augst 21 from Kabul by a transport military aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) amid a deteriorating security scenario in the Afghan capital, people familiar with the development said.

The aircraft landed at Dushanbe in Tajikistan after evacuating the Indians, they said, adding the flight is expected to arrive at the Hindon airbase near Delhi in the evening.

As per a rough estimate, the number of Indians stranded in Afghanistan could be around 400 and India has been looking at ways to evacuate them, including by coordinating with the U.S. and other friendly countries. — PTI

Taiwan says China wants to ’emulate’ the Taliban

Taiwan’s foreign minister accused China on August 21 of wanting to “emulate” the Taliban, saying the island that Beijing claims as sovereign Chinese territory did not wish to be subject to communism or crimes against humanity.

The rapid fall of the U.S.-backed Afghan government has sparked heated debate in Taiwan about whether they could suffer the same fate to a Chinese invasion, while state media in China has said Kabul’s fate showed Taiwan it cannot trust Washington. -REUTERS

Bahrain says allows airport use for evacuations

The island kingdom of Bahrain has said it is “allowing flights to make use of Bahrain’s transit facilities” amid the evacuations of Afghanistan.

The kingdom made the announcement in a statement released early August 21.

Bahrain, in the Persian Gulf off Saudi Arabia, is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet.

The announcement comes as the U.S. faced issues August 20 with its facilities at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar filling up with those fleeing the Taliban takeover of the country. –AP

President Biden warns lives could be lost in massive Kabul airlift operations

U.S. President Joe Biden has said that the mass evacuation from Kabul, one of the largest and most difficult airlifts in history, is not without risk of loss of lives, but vowed to bring all Americans and partners home from Afghanistan, as his administration grappled with the fallout from the chaotic exit.

Mr. Biden’s remarks on August 20 come as the U..S rushed to airlift as many people as possible out of the Afghan capital ahead of a self-imposed deadline to depart Afghanistan by August 31.

In a speech delivered from the White House, Mr. Biden said the United States has evacuated more than 18,000 people since July and approximately 13,000 since the airlifts began on Saturday.

NATO commits to improving operations at Kabul airport

NATO foreign ministers committed on August 20 to focus on ensuring the safe evacuation from Afghanistan of their citizens and of Afghans deemed at risk after the Taliban takeover, centering on improving operations at Kabul airport first.

Faced with continuing chaos in the capital and the exit roads, many of the 30 allied nations raised “the need to work harder on how we can get more people … into the airport, then processed and then onto the planes,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. He called that “the big, big, big challenge.”

All too often over the past hours and days, planes from NATO nations have been able to get to Kabul, only to be forced to leave empty or near-empty.

Blinken says 12 nations to host Afghan evacuees

Secretary of State Antony Blinken says 13 countries have thus far agreed to at least temporarily host at-risk Afghans evacuated from Afghanistan and a dozen more have agreed to serve as transit points for evacuees, including Americans and others.

Mr. Blinken says in a Friday statement that potential Afghan refugees not already cleared for resettlement in the United States will be housed at facilities in Albania, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Qatar, Rwanda, Ukraine and Uganda.

Transit countries include Bahrain, Britain, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Qatar, Tajikistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan. -PTI

Taliban to unveil new Afghan govt framework within weeks, official says

The Taliban aim to unveil a new governing framework for Afghanistan in the next few weeks, a spokesman for the Islamist movement said on August 21, after the insurgents’ swift takeover of the South Asian nation.

“Legal, religious and foreign policy experts in the Taliban aim to present the new governing framework in the next few weeks,” the official told Reuters. –Reuters

U.S. is going to retain laser focus on its counterterrorism mission in Afghanistan: Biden

The United States is going to retain a laser focus on its counterterrorism mission in Afghanistan, President Joe Biden said August 20 and warned the Taliban of a forceful response to any attack on American forces or disruption of its operations at the Kabul airport.

“We made clear to the Taliban that any attack, any attack on our forces or disruption of our operations at the airport will be met with a swift and forceful response,” Mr. Biden told reporters at a White House news conference.

“We’re also keeping a close watch on any potential terrorist threat at or around the airport, including from the ISIS affiliates in Afghanistan,” he said. –PTI

LGBT+ Afghans desperate to escape amid Taliban takeover

It was never easy being gay or transgender in Afghanistan. Now it could be deadly, according to LGBT+ Afghans, whose fear of violence under the Taliban is driving a frantic bid to escape.

But how any evacuation might work is another matter, with scant practical support coming from overseas and even less hope that Islamist militants will let them into the airport.

“If I find a visa and a country gives me permission to leave, of course I will risk everything to get out,” said one gay Afghan student, whose name was withheld for his protection. –Reuters

Pak’s strategic interest in Afghan is to counter Indian influence, mitigate spillover: U.S. State Dept IG

Pakistan’s strategic security objectives in Afghanistan almost certainly continue to be countering Indian influence and mitigating spillover of the Afghan civil war into Pakistani territory, a U.S. government report has said, citing inputs from the Defence Intelligence Agency.

“Pakistan continues to support peace talks, while maintaining ties with the Afghan Taliban,” U.S. Department of State Office of the Inspector General noted in its latest quarterly report on Afghanistan.

“According to the DIA, Pakistan’s strategic security objectives in Afghanistan almost certainly continue to be countering Indian influence and mitigating spillover into the Pakistani territory,” the report said. –PTI

India to prioritise granting visas to civil society members, opinion makers, women activists from Afghanistan

In line with its historical ties with Afghan people, India will prioritise granting visas to civil society members, opinion makers, women activists, students and NGO workers from Afghanistan in view of the current situation in the country, people familiar with the development said on August 20.

Afghan people feeling threatened or facing the fear of persecution and those who supported India in rolling out various welfare and development projects will also be given priority for grant of visas, they said. –PTI

Taliban appeals for international recognition; says China has ‘big role’ to play

The Taliban have appealed to the international community to recognise it amid growing resentment against it at home and abroad, even as the Afghan militant group sought to placate China, saying Beijing can play a “big role” under its rule in the strife-torn country.

Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen said the international community should “respect the will of the Afghan people” and officially recognise his group which has taken over power in Kabul. –PTI

Hunger spreading in Afghanistan: UN food agency

Andrew Patterson, WFP’s deputy country director, told The Associated Press on Friday that after Faizabad, a provincial capital in the north, fell to the Taliban last week, the agency’s field office succeeded in negotiating access with the local Taliban command, and “we had (a food) truck on the road the next day.” However, Patterson said the situation in Kandahar, Herat and Jalalabad so far hasn’t allowed the U.N. agency to resume distributing food in those areas.

Biden vows to evacuate all Americans

President Joe Biden pledged firmly Friday to bring all Americans home from Afghanistan — and all Afghans who aided the war effort, too — as officials confirmed that U.S. military helicopters flew beyond the Kabul airport to scoop up 169 Americans seeking to evacuate. Biden’s promises came as thousands more Americans and others seeking to escape the Taliban struggled to get past crushing crowds, Taliban airport checkpoints and sometimes-insurmountable U.S. bureaucracy.

“We will get you home,” Biden promised Americans who were still in Afghanistan days after the Taliban retook control of Kabul, ending a two-decade war. The President’s comments, delivered at the White House, were intended to project purpose and stability at the conclusion of a week during which images from Afghanistan more often suggested chaos, especially at the airport.

“We’re making the same commitment” to Afghan wartime helpers as to U.S. citizens, Biden said, offering the prospect of assistance to Afghans who largely have been fighting individual battles to get the documents and passage into the airport that they need to leave. He called the Afghan allies “equally important” in the evacuations. –AP

Online petition seeking asylum for Afghan women gets 3 lakh signatures

Adeeba Qayoumi, a 21-year-old woman who fled to India from Herat, Afghanistan, in 2019, has started an online petition in memory of her 29-year-old cousin Farishta — a civil rights activist killed by the Taliban last year.

As of Friday evening, the online petition, which urges the Central government to grant asylum to women and children who are fleeing Afghanistan, had received over three lakh signatures.

Official Taliban websites go offline

Taliban websites that delivered the insurgents’ official messages of victory to Afghans and the world at large in five languages went offline abruptly on August 20, indicating an effort to squelch them.

It is not immediately clear, though, why the sites in the Pashto, Urdu, Arabic, English and Dari languages went offline. They had been shielded by Cloudflare, a San Francisco-based content delivery network and denial-of-service protection provider.

Indonesia evacuates dozens

Indonesia has moved its Afghanistan diplomatic mission from Kabul to Pakistan, its foreign minister said on Saturday, after its air force evacuated dozens in the wake of the Taliban’s seizure of power.

“Temporarily, the diplomatic mission in Kabul will be done from Islamabad,” Retno Marsudi said in televised remarks at the Halim military airport in Jakarta.

The initial plan had been to “continue our diplomatic mission in Kabul with a small team” but changed due to a “new development”, which she did not specify. She did not take questions.

Jailed Saudi activist Loujain al-Hathloul expected to be released | Human Rights News

Prominent activist Loujain al-Hathloul, who has been in jail since 2018, expected out of prison on Thursday, sister says.

Saudi women’s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul is expected to be released from prison on Thursday after more than 1,000 days in detention.

In a series of tweets, her sister Alia al-Hathloul said Loujain was expected to get out of prison as per a judge’s order but will remain on probation and be banned from travel outside of Saudi Arabia.

“It is a potential release from prison and she is still under probation, travel ban and awaiting news of the appeal process,” said Alia on Tuesday.

In December 2020, a Saudi court sentenced Loujain al-Hathloul to five years and eight months in prison on terrorism-related charges and banned her from leaving the country for five years.

Local media reported she had been found guilty by the court on charges including agitating for change, pursuing a foreign agenda and using the internet to harm public order.

The court suspended two years and 10 months of her sentence, and she was set to be released in March.

Her potential release would come weeks into US President Joe Biden’s administration, which has vowed it would take a firmer stance on the kingdom’s human rights record.

Biden said he would halt US support for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, saying the more than six-year war, widely seen as a proxy conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran, “has to end”.

Last week, Saudi authorities released two activists with US citizenship on bail pending their trials.

Bader al-Ibrahim, an epidemiologist and journalist, and Salah al-Haidar, a media commentator whose mother Aziza al-Yousef is a prominent women’s rights campaigner, were released on Thursday.

Rights abuses

Loujain al-Hathloul, 31, has been in custody since 2018 after being arrested along with at least a dozen other women’s rights activists in a crackdown on dissent led by de-facto ruler Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman (MBS).

Her arrest came just weeks before the historic lifting of a decades-long ban on female drivers, a reform they had long campaigned for.

Al-Hathloul’s case, and her imprisonment for the past two-and-a-half years, have drawn criticism from rights groups, members of the US Congress and European Union lawmakers.

Pro-government Saudi media branded them as “traitors” and al-Hathloul’s family says she experienced sexual harassment and torture in detention.

Rights organisations have also documented the torture and sexual violence al-Hathloul has been subjected to since her arrest.

According to her family members, some of the torture sessions have been in the presence of MBS’s close aide Saud al-Qahtani.

The Saudi court recently dismissed those allegations.

According to London-based NGO ALQST, Monday marked 1,000 days since Loujain’s imprisonment.

The detention of women activists has cast a renewed spotlight on the human rights record of the kingdom, an absolute monarchy which has also faced intense criticism over the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its Istanbul consulate.

BEIJING | Asian stocks rise after solid US jobs report

BEIJING — Asian stocks were mostly higher Monday, despite a new Chinese threat of tariff hikes on U.S. goods, after Washington reported solid employment numbers.

KEEPING SCORE: The Shanghai Composite Index skidded 0.8 percent to 2,719.38 but Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 added 0.2 percent to 22,560.99. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 0.7 percent to 27,863.87 while South Korea’s Kospi advanced 0.3 percent to 2,294.41. Sydney’s S&P-ASX 200 gained 0.5 percent to 6,266.40.

Benchmarks in Taiwan, New Zealand and Southeast Asia also rose. WALL STREET: Kraft Heinz climbed after the maker of Oscar Mayer meats and Jell-O pudding said improved sales in Europe and Asia helped offset weaker results from the U.S. and Canada. Cereal maker Post Holdings and video vame publisher Take-Two Interactive both climbed after reporting better-than-expected financial results.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 0.5 percent to 2,840.35. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5 percent to 25,462.58. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.1 percent to 7,812.01.

U.S. JOBS: The Labor Department said employers added fewer jobs in July than expected but more were added in May and June than previously reported. The bankruptcy of toy retailer Toys R Us and job cuts in local governments dragged down the totals. Hourly wage growth was modest in July. Inflation-adjusted wages are decreasing because inflation has gradually picked up.

TRADE WAR: The Chinese government issued a $60 billion list of U.S. goods including semiconductors and industrial chemicals targeted for retaliation if Washington goes ahead with its latest tariff threat. The Finance Ministry said the charges, ranging from 5 percent to 25 percent, will take effect if the Trump administration goes ahead with plans to impose 25 percent duties on $200 billion of Chinese goods. The two sides already have raised tariffs on billions of dollars of each other’s goods in a dispute over Beijing’s technology policy.

CHINA CURRENCY: Regulators tightened controls on trading in China’s yuan in a possible effort to stop its decline against the dollar. Traders were ordered to post a 20 percent deposit for contracts to buy or sell yuan, which raises the cost of betting it will fall further. The yuan has drifted lower against the dollar since February, which could help exporters that face higher U.S. tariffs but also raises the risk of capital flowing out of the economy. The central bank “had been largely tolerant” of the yuan’s decline, but the latest changes “may have gathered concerns including capital flight,” said Jingyi Pan of IG in a report.

SAUDI-CANADA: Saudi Arabia ordered the Canadian ambassador to leave the ultraconservative kingdom and said it would freeze “all new business” after criticism of its arrests of activists. Canada gets about 10 percent of its crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia. The dispute appears centered around a tweet by Global Affairs Canada calling on the kingdom to “immediately release” detained women’s rights activists. Among those arrested is Samar Badawi, whose brother Raif Badawi was arrested in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and later sentenced to 1,000 lashes and 10 years in jail for criticizing clerics. His wife, Ensaf Haidar, lives in Canada.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude gained 34 cents to $68.83 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract sank 47 cents on Friday to close at $68.49. Brent crude, used to price international oils, rose 40 cents to $73.61 in London. It lost 24 cents the previous session to $73.21.

CURRENCY: The dollar declined to 111.33 yen from Friday’s 111.26 yen. The euro edged down to $1.1563 from $1.1569.

#setem Pada tahun 1849, Gabenor Melaka Lord Arthur Barring mahukan sesuatu untuk diingati oleh generasi seterusnya. Beliau melantik seorang pembuat jam untuk mencipta sekeping setem. Tetapi setem tersebut ditertawakan oleh Gabenor Indiakerana terdapat kecacatan padanya. Maka Lord Arthur Barring marah lalu membuang setem tersebut, yang kemudiannya dikutip oleh cucunya. Pada tahun 2008, Charles Barring IV (Richard Gardner), seorang pewaris Lord Arthur, mengadakan sidang akhbar di kawasan peranginan A Famosa. Beliau mempamerkan warisan keluarganya, Setem Barring. Setem Barring melalui perjalanan yang panjang dan kini kembali ke bumi Melaka, di mana setem itu dihasilkan. Setem bersejarah tersebut akan dipamerkan di Muzium Melaka. Sid (Rashidi Ishak) dan Joe (Afdlin Shauki) menghadiri sidang akhbar itu, dengan tujuan mahu mencuri setem yang dianggarkan bernilai 2 juta ringgit. Sebenarnya, Pak Ramli (Datuk Aziz Sattar) yang memaksa Sid dan Joe mencuri setem itu untuk menampung kos membeli tanah tapak Rumah Harapan, rumah anak yatim yang diuruskannya. Pak Ramli memerlukan RM 500,000.00. Sid dan Joe tidak mahu, namun terpaksa melakukannya kerana budi Pak Ramli yang pernah membesarkan mereka di rumah anak yatim tersebut. Namun, bukan sahaja Sid dan Joe yang mahukan setem itu. Piranha Lim (Chew Kin Wah), seorang ketua kumpulan kongsi gelapjuga berminat; begitu juga dengan Vellu (Sathiya) yang bekerja sebagai pemandu di syarikat keselamatan yang akan membawa setem tersebut ke muzium, masing-masing merancang untuk mendapatkan setem tersebut. Oleh kerana begitu banyak perancangan yang dilakukan untuk setem tersebut, keadaan menjadi kacau-bilau. Mula-mulanya, Joe dan Sid memberanikan diri bersuhabat dengan Piranha biarpun menyedari kegagalan boleh dihukum dengan tangan dibaham ikan piranha dalam akuarium, dan dibantu oleh Lao (Adam Corrie), orang suruhan Piranha. Vellu pula mendapatkan bantuan Mani (Indi Nadarajah) yang baru keluar dari penjara untuk menyeludup setem berharga itu untuk kepentingan diri. Sebelum memulakan operasi, Joe melimpahkan jus terhadap motosikal yang dimiliki mat rempit. Dalam cubaan pertama Joe dan Sid merampas Setem Barring dari van keselamatan yang dipandu Vellu, keadaan menjadi haru-biru sehingga berlakunya pelanggaran kereta, dan setem itu terkeluar dari van keselamatan lalu terlekat pada muka Aryanto (Isma Yusoof), seorang pendatang tanpa izin dari Indonesia, untuk dibawa balik ke rumah usang yang harus dilawatinya kemudian. Lao cedera parah dalam kemalangan, dan Afdlin secara senyap-senyap mengambil kesempatan untuk menamatkan riwayatnya di tempat kejadian. Piranha amat kesal dengan kegagalan mereka (dan kehilangan Lao) lalu memperhebatkan pencarian setem dengan menghantar Burn (Bront Palarae) bersama Joe dan Sid. Setelah dijemput masuk oleh Marcello (Harun Salim Bachik) di petempatan usang yang diduduki PATI dari Indonesia, Aryanto menyedari setem berharga yang dibawa baliknya setelah menonton berita di TV. Justeru, Marcello cuba meleraikan keadaan secepat mungkin dengan memanggil Burn, Sid dan Joe ke mari untuk memperdagangkan setem itu, yang juga diekori Vellu dan Mani. Malangnya urusniaga tersebut dipatahkan oleh serbuan polis, sementara Joe yang menunggu di kereta diugut oleh Mani agar membantunya. Perebutan kali kedua Setem Barring menyaksikan setem tersebut terlantar pada beg Iskandar (Que Haidar), seorang pemuzik jalanan yang cacat penglihatan. Kerana penglibatan mereka dalam pemburuan setem, Vellu bersama Aryanto yang tidak banyak mengerti apa yang berlaku gara-gara setem tersebut dibawa menghadap Piranha sebagai tebusan selagi Setem Barring tidak dijumpai. Di rumah Iskandar, kakaknya Alliya (Vanidah Imran) menjumpai setem itu agar boleh dilekat pada sampul surat yang menyimpan borang permohonan kepada klinik di Singapura yang boleh memulihkan penglihatan adiknya. Setelah tak lama mengekori Iskandar ke rumahnya dan memerhati gerak-gerinya, Sid, Burn dan Mani menunggu peluang merampas setem itu (sementara Joe terkurung dalam but kereta). Mani menyamar sebagai polis untuk menyoal Iskandar mengenai setem itu, dan setelah mendengar penjelasan Iskandar lekas dia ke peti pos untuk menghalang Alliya dari memasukkan surat. Mani terpaksa menahan Iskandar dan Alliya dalam rumah sementara menunggu posmen datang, dan apabila posmen datang, dia membawa mereka mengejar posmen itu sambil diekori Sid dan Burn. Setibanya di pejabat pos pada waktu malam, Mani berjaya memeras posmen itu (Aziz M. Osman) untuk mengeluarkan semua suratnya agar boleh dicari setem berharga yang diburu selama ini. Bagaimanapun, Piranha sempat menghalang Mani sambil mengambil Sid, Vellu, Iskandar, Alliya dan juga Aryanto sebagai tebusan, sementara Burn melepaskan beberapa das tembakan ke arah but kereta yang mengurung Joe. Selepas mengikat mereka berlima pada helikopter, geng Piranha meminta khidmat pakar setem untuk mengesahkan ketulenan setem. Rupa-rupanya setem itu palsu kerana kertasnya masih baru kata pakar setem, maka Piranha naik berang lalu menyuruh agar para tebusannya dibunuh serta-merta. Nasib baik Joe muncul untuk menyelamatkan mereka semua (dia dapat melindungi dirinya dengan peti peralatan sewaktu ditembak dari luar but) dan mematahkan kejahatan geng Piranha. Untuk menyelamatkan diri mereka, Joe terpaksa membakar Burn yang mengganas, manakala Piranha dan ahli-ahli gengnya yang lain melarikan diri dengan kereta Joe, sebelum diserang oleh segerombolan mat rempit (kerana Joe pernah mengenakan jus pada motosikal mereka sebelum ini). Pada hari seterusnya, Sid, Joe, Mani, Vellu, Aryanto, Iskandar dan Alliya berpakat untuk mengajar Charles Barring IV kerana memperbodohkan rakyat dengan setem palsu itu. Di hotel, Sid berbual bersama Barring, dan maka itu dia mengetahui Barring sendiri tidak pernah melihat setem pusaka yang sebenar dan dia menuntut US$4 juta atas kehilangan setem itu. Langkah seterusnya, mereka bertujuh mengejar Barring ke KLIA sambil menyamar sebagai pelancong dan kakitangan lapangan terbang, dan menjayakan misi dengan meletakkan setem palsu dalam beg Barring agar dia boleh ditahan oleh polis. Tak lama kemudian, setelah lama merenungkan betapa bertuahnya mereka bertujuh seandainya setem itu tulen, kemudian Sid teringat kata-kata Charles Barring itu lalu memaksudkan Setem Barring pusaka ada yang tulennya, dan setem itu mungkin sekali terletak di Melaka. Hanya Joe dan Sid yang menunjukkan minat untuk mencari setem itu, maka ke sanalah mereka menerjah. Kiri kanan mereka mencari, akhirnya mereka tiba di sebuah kedai antik yang dijaga oleh wanita bernama Suraya (Diana Danielle). Setelah ditanyakan mengenai setem pusaka itu, Suraya menunjukkan peti pencetak setem kepada mereka. Secara senyap-senyap mereka menjumpai Setem Barring yang tulen dalam peti itu, tetapi Sid membuat keputusan untuk meninggalkan setem dalam kedai tersebut
